I enjoy knowing what they’re doing in their college careers and beyond. One student I’ve kept in touch with recently admitted his romantic love for me. As his teacher 10 years ago, I’d never have dreamed of this happening. What’s difficult is I think I reciprocate those feelings.

The new site update is up! Dating a former professor – bad for his reputation? Almost two years ago, I took a class with a fantastic professor during my undergraduate time, in my primary major. I was a bit of an older student thought he’s still older than I, but not old enough to be my father – the age difference doesn’t bother me.
I’d hang out in his office sometimes or elsewhere on campus and we’d talk, he’d help me clarify my plans, and also get to know one another. Fast forward to know – I’ve since graduated, and will be going to grad school in the fall at a completely different university.

Institutions tend to either ban student-faculty dating altogether or where a supervisory relationship exists. The ages of the couple — her, 25; him, 71 — are unusually far apart. Princeton, like a growing number of institutions, has banned all student-faculty relationships, including for graduate students. Platt has said that she waited until two years after her graduation to ask Mitchell out.
Mitchell, who is currently on preplanned leave, is just one of a number of professors to engage in or attempt to initiate a relationship with a former student or students. Still, experts with different positions on student-faculty dating advise against adopting any kind of timeline for dating former students.

The teacher, then 24, had sex with the year-old girl at his house less than two months later, a tribunal heard. He admitted he had fancied the former student, given the pseudonym “Jane”, while she was still at school, but did not act on it, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal was told. Senior tribunal member Bridget Cullen and two other members found the “romantically inexperienced” college music teacher still held a power imbalance over Jane when the relationship began.
It would have allowed Jane to make mature decisions “free of the teacher-student sphere of influence”. The teacher, who taught Jane music for two years, became aware he had developed romantic feelings for her during her final term and sought help from a psychiatrist. The day after posing with her for a graduation photo, placing both his arms around her, he accepted Jane’s Facebook friend request, sent two days earlier, the tribunal heard.
They then began communicating via Facebook and texts from November 17, , and in early December the teacher spent time with Jane at a beach. She then sent him a text. The following night he arranged for Jane to pick him up from a staff Christmas party and they parked and had an “intimate kiss”. Jane visited the teacher at his home and on January 12 last year he picked her up from a party and they had consensual sex at his house.
On January 26 Jane’s parents became aware of the relationship and reported the teacher to the principal. The tribunal found the teacher did not groom Jane and there was no improper conduct by him while he was her teacher, but said he was unsuitable to teach because of the sexual misconduct. It cancelled his registration for 19 months, from February 14 last year, and ordered him to provide a psychologist’s report before reapplying.

My mates think my old teacher fancies me and as i’m no longer at college something may happen. You’re both adults, right? He’s not grading you now, so there’s no conflict of interest. Should be fine. Forewarning: people may still look askance at your relationship because they will wonder if you were secretly dating while you were his student. It’s frowned upon but not wrong as he’s no longer your teacher.
You just have to make sure that nothing connected to your degree or your career can be looked upon as iffy. If he played a crucial part in either, their validity could be called into question later.
